code: wb3199

American coin silver beaker or julep cup by Albert Coles of New York City, c. 1865 - 1875. The underside of the circular, pedestal base bears Coles′ 2nd mark, the so-called Angry Man. This wonderfully French American beaker has a tapered body engraved: Souvenir fragile d′une amitié durable. on one side (A fragile remembrance of a durable friendship) and an ornate French Crest having a horned Knight atop a Stag on the other side. The top lip is rolled inward and much of the original interior gilding is present. The bottom of the body is flared out and stepped to conform to the wider, heavy circular base, which has a band of Fleur-de-Lis decoration between finely beaded borders. This not only creates an interesting visual effect, but adds stability and ease of use with the larger base. You will want to, and should use this wonderful beaker, which has the surprisingly large fluid capacity of about 13 ozs. or approx. 400 ml. This very special beaker or cup is 4′ tall, 3 3/8" rim diameter, 2 3/43" base diameter and it weighs 192 grams or 6.2 ozs. Troy. Inscribed as described above, the soft, warm, original finish is present, with no buffing or machine polishing. The excellent original condition and clear detail, with no removals, repairs or alterations, make this an especially attractive offering.
